Dancing Spirit
Artist: SAINT KYRIAKI (Katie Elizabeth Chonacas)
Date: April 8, 2024
Medium: Water-based pigment markers (Posca) on fine cotton canvas panel
Curatorial Description
Executed during the historic April 8, 2024 solar eclipse, Dancing Spirit: serves as
a vibrant, energetic antidote to the celestial shadow that temporarily blanketed
New York City. Returning from a high-energy gathering in the heart of Manhattan,
the artist immediately channeled the residual communal buzz and the rare
atmospheric shift into an expressive explosion of pure color and motion.
The canvas panel reject a dark, somber interpretation of the eclipse, instead
prioritizing a brilliant palette of hot magenta, electric cyan, and fresh teal overlaid
against a dense black ground. Applied through rapid, urgent gestures with waterbased pigment markers, the interlocking chevron shapes on the right and the
vertical, neon pillars on the left establish a powerful visual rhythm. These bold
geometric forces are cut through by deliberate, erratic scratches of opaque white
and silver strokes—representing the raw, uncut energy of the artist's personal
spirit breaking through the dark.
Intentionally crafted to radiate light and warmth, this 1-of-1 physical painting is a
joyous exploration of creative resilience. It captures a moment where cosmic
alignment meets personal liberation, translated directly into a visual frequency
meant to elevate, inspire, and brighten the daily space of its viewer.
